How to Find the Right Size Vanity for your Bathroom
If you're remodeling your bathroom or building new construction, the vanity is a necessary step in the process. Before you jump in, make sure you have the perfect size vanity for your space. Dakota® has a variety of options to fit any bathroom style. Choose from four modern finishes, you can get the timeless Monroe vanity or the rustic Barndoor vanity. In this blog, we'll walk you through the steps to picking a vanity that will fit your space perfectly.
Monroe Vanity Sizes:
- - 18"W x 16-5/8"D
- - 24"W x 21-5/8"D
- - 30"W x 21-5/8"D
- - 36"W x 21-5/8"D
Sliding Barndoor Vanity Sizes:

- - 36"W x 21-5/8"D

The sizes above are the dimensions of the vanity base only, allowing you to pick any top to match your style. The sizes above do not account for door pulls or the vanity top. Use the UCREATE countertop planner to combine a countertop, faucet, and sink bowl to match your style and complement the vanity base. Dakota vanities are best fit for smaller bathrooms, which includes half baths and small full baths.
First, decide where in the bathroom you are planning to place your vanity. Factors such as door swing, plumbing, and if you want it on a single wall or a corner will assist you in making this decision.
The next step is measuring the width of the available space. You'll likely be measuring from a wall to a shower or toilet. You'll need to pay attention to the bathroom and shower door swing to ensure they won't interfere with your vanity. Depending on what's next to your vanity, plan at least 6 inches of space on either side for toilet access, a trash can, or a towel rod. Remember, the vanity top typically adds an extra 1/2"-1" on either size of the vanity. A wider vanity affords you a larger sink bowl, more counter space, and more storage. Buying a vanity that maximizes your space, but isn't too wide is best practice. Remember, Dakota has Monroe vanities in 18", 24", 30", and 36" widths and Barndoor vanities in 30" and 36" widths.
Your vanity depth matters, the standard depth is around 21". Dakota vanities are 21-5/8" with exception of our smallest Monroe vanity at 16-5/8". Measuring your bathroom width will help you decide which depth to choose. Our Monroe vanity has either one or two shaker style doors, ensure you have 20"-30" of floor space in front of your vanity to comfortably open the doors and walk through.
A smaller bathroom can be challenging, but not impossible. If your bathroom is narrow, opt for our 16-5/8" deep Monroe vanity, meant for tight spaces, freeing up valuable floor space. Our barndoor vanity is another great option for narrow bathrooms, as you don't need to worry about the door opening outwards, since it slides sideways, taking up no extra room.
All of our vanity bases are a standard 34" tall and with the added 1-1/2"-2" for the vanity top, overall height is 35-1/2" to 36". Backsplash height is typically 4 inches, plan this in if you have any obstructions like a mirror or outlet.

A well sized vanity can offer the most functionality without overwhelming the space. Follow the width, depth, and height standards above to choose the best size vanity for your space. If you won't need to worry about space, think about features like doors, interior storage, and open shelves when picking your vanity.
